We did not know this until a customer informed us. We had replaced all 28 of the Insulated Glass Units in her house one hot summer day; and we were at her house the next morning to replace the two patio sliding door units that were also badly fogged. When we arrived, the first thing she told us was, "I have not slept very well for ten years since my husband passed away. Last night was the first time I was not woken up every 15 minutes due to my air conditioner kicking on and off" To us, that was a very significant example of the difference between badly fogged units and having good units in a house. We cannot give you the exact stats on what this means on your electric bill, But we can in fact, tell you that having them fixed can save you money. What you may spend on replacements could very well double your savings in just a few years.
Most new homes have a warranty on their Insulated Units from five up to eight years. If your home is not over eight years old, then check your warranty for replacing badly fogged units. In the Texas heat, the windows on your south and west walls may get hot enough to break the seals on the units which lets air in between the glass. IF you see moisture in your windows, the seal is broken, they will eventually turn white where you cannot see out of them. When this happens, you CANNOT repair the unit, because the moisture stains the glass on the inside and leaves a rainbow image. Trying to clean the glass and reseal the unit cost more in labor time and that cost more than a new unit.
If you break the outside glass and the inside glass is not broken, it is better to have a new IG installed rather than having someone come out and try to fix the one broken piece of glass. This is also more labor involved than buying a new unit, AND, you may not hire the right person and if the seal is not applied correctly, your windows will fog up, sometimes, by the coolness in the very next morning.
